    Posted: 1/28/11 at 4:26pm

I'm a newbie to the HG. (Less than one year) But have been throwing track events competitively for many years.  I need help with my 56 WFD.  The video shows one of my decent throws.  Many of them would release early and I would fly out to the left.  (Not much of a block on those)

I've watched many of the youtube videos, but I know I'm missing something.  I need a lot more reps for sure.  But I figure there are plenty of you that would see something I'm not.

Thank you in Advance

You are pretty much straight up through the whole throw and
your both feet need to be anchored for that final pull.
Get lower and use your legs to help you drive the weight
around and up.

Post one of the bad ones - it's hard to see what you're doing
wrong from a video where you do it right.

I think if you look at your bad throws, you'll see that you're
dragging the weight way behind you. You're doing it a little
here, but it's probably worse on those throws that come out
early. Push the weight ahead of you, don't drag it behind you.
With your T&F background, think hammer, not discus.

AlDargie - Thanks for the tip.  I was going to throw today and work on getting lower, but it went from 35 to 10 degrees today and 5 inches of snow with high winds today.  I'll post the fix when I can throw again.

agm_ That makes sense, I'm in a great discus power position at the block, but that is too much weight and force to pull around.

Here is what most of them looked like. (I only fouled by about 15ft)

You might try a higher orbit in the second spin and focus on keeping the feet lower to the ground once they come off the ground. quick feet are key to creating torque and seperation.

I would bet that your lack of confidence in your grip is keeping you from getting aggressive at the delivery of the throw. Thats what the hook grip is for. looks like you're holding back. Smooth spins though...

Will, I will definatley try keeping the legs lower.  Would you also want to see a higher orbit for the 28WFD?  Or keep the end of the weight about eye level?

I just made some 5/8" & 3/4" D handles for my weights.  The handle I'm throwing here is off an olympic bar and can't get a hook grip on it.  I'll be able to use the hook on my new handles.

Thanks for the help.

Took a lot of throws today.  Tried to get the legs lower.   Used the hook grip successfully for the first time.  Here is video of throwing the 56,42, & 28.  Had a much better throws overall with the 56.  And a new practice PR with the 28

I came across this video of Burt Sorin and Eric Frasure talking about the Weight for Distance and it helped me quite a bit.  Hopefully this will help you with your WFD.

Hey Will, what exactly do you mean by "higher orbit"?  Is that something to do with in the box or prior?

Can you tell me how you made the D handles for your weights?  I don't know how to weld, but I have a friend that can do it for me if I give him the steel.  I have a length of 5/8" HRS that is somewhere around 18" long sitting in the garage right now.

+1.

They are cheap and the shipping would be next  to nothing.  I just got two d-handles from him at Albany.

Ben   If your friend welds he can figure it out. If he needs an explanation of how to make a d handle, I wouldn't trust his welding.Wink
