Hey everyone!

So, I am trying to envision the proper way to do the hammer.  I think that I am trying to "throw" the hammer more than trying to spin it fast, hold on and release. After all of the events in LB the only one that I felt pain in my previously injured arms were the hammers. I am sure it was because I had bent arms and was trying to throw it.  Should arms not really be used that much besides to hold onto the hammer and stay relaxed?

What do you guys think? Is that an OK way of putting it.  I am just trying to make it click!

Correct, your biceps shouldn't have anything to do with the release other than as stabilizers.  Your shoulders and upper back should be finishing the release by opening up (even leaning back a bit)...this is what lifts your arms ( that and your orbit) to get the hammer going up.

Any time I find myself trying to pull the hammer through faster then I t-rex the release horribly.

Thanks for the insight.  My biceps were exactly what strained on me on Saturday.  I will try to just "hold on" keep the arms long and see what happens during practice.

I mean when I put a death grip on the hammer, i.e. crushing down on it with middle and pointer fingers, I have a tendency to hold on too long and release late.

By using only as many fingers as I need, and thumbs, I can still guide the hammer and push/pull it around...and I get to have relatively relaxed arms.

But then again, I don't throw hammer all that far...

I still have no idea what you meant by golf grip, which is generally thought of to have interlocking fingers.

But ya, NEVER put a death grip on the hammer.  Why u do that?

Agreed on interlocking fingers...this is no good.  I don't watch or play golf, but I have heard it said that this type of grip is analogous to how one grips a club.

So my bad on the flubbed example.  Made sense in m'head.

I used to grip the hammer with extreme prejudice because I thought doing so would enable me to put more on it.  This was/is not the case.  And, more to the original point of this post, every once in awhile I would get a bit of bicep strain.  I lightened up, got better technique, and now have a much faster/wider orbit.  Relatively speaking.

Wait...golf grip...I hold the hammer with my thumb up but not fingers interlocked...so like a partial golf grip.  Never though to ask how to hold a hammer...

So thumb along handle like that (almost said shaft) but not interlocking the pinkie and pointer.

Shh, Craig. I want to be able to say "Hey, what grip are you using?" just before they throw.

If you're too worried about holding on, you need to hit up more tacky and relax the arms.  My mental cue is "chopping wood" over my right leg.  I only "pull" the hammer on my finish.

Nice, long arms for a solid orbit.
