Since Craig is holding my temporary whiteboard glory hostage, I guess I’ll start a log here. Probably time to progress beyond pencil and paper anyway.

I’m currently focusing on the Olympic lifts. I’m hoping to lift in a couple of meets before the Highland Games season gets into full swing this spring, hopefully including the National Masters in Savannah. The other big goal is to throw well at the MWC in Greenville in May.

12/28/2011

Push Press

The Push Press appears to not be getting the love it deserves on the whiteboard, so I decided to see what I could do while there were openings. I haven’t been doing much pressing lately but decided to just see what happened.

45 lbs x 10

135 x 3

165 x 3

200 x 1

215 x miss - good leg drive, but the lockout just wasn’t there.

I was pretty happy with this. It tied my PR for this century and was 5 lbs over current bodyweight. The lift was actually easy except for the lockout. I think I’m good for quite a bit more once I get back in the groove and get the triceps woke up. Getting my weight back up a few pounds will also help.

Clean & Jerk

60 kg x 1 clean + 2 jerks

70 x 1

80 x 1

85 x 1

90 x 1

80 x 1

These all felt good considering I did presses beforehand.

Bear Hug Deadlift

http://www.davidhorne-gripmaster.com/article2.html

I’m taking part in the Bear Hug Deadlift challenge on David Horne’s forum. So far my best is 243 lbs. I’ve gotten 256 lbs off the floor but can’t hold on long enough to get it high enough. These are fun and definitely work on the aspect of my grip that is the weak link for stone lifting.

111 lbs x 3

156 x 2

211 x 1

256 x miss x 3

146 x 5 x 3

12/29/2011

Warm up - Snatch complex with bar

Snatch

40 kg x 3

50 x 2

60 x 1

65 x 1 x 2

70 x 1

50 x 2 x 4

Horizontal Cable Chop

40(+tubing) x 10 x 3 ea. side

I have tubing attached across the weight stack to add some elastic resistance. It lets me add a little acceleration to the movements. Sort of gives the best of both worlds.

Standing Cable Y for Shoulders

25(+tubing) x 15 x 2

Rollouts from knees

10, 10

12/31/2011

Warm Up

One Arm KB Swing (each side) - 16 kg x 10, 24 kg x 10, 32 kg x 10

Throwing Drills - 360 drill, line drill, glide/hops, winds w/10# chain hammer, WFD swings, WOB swings

Clean & Jerk complex with bar

Clean & Jerk

60 kg x 1 clean + 2 jerks

70 x 1

80 x1

85 x 1

90 x 1

95 x miss x 2 - good strong pull, but for some reason I was balking at diving under the bar.

80 x 1

85 x 1

90 x 1

92.5 x 1

95 x miss - this time I got a really nice clean and a strong jerk, but pushed it a little forward and dropped it before I could recover from the split. No matter. It was strong otherwise and I just needed to get over whatever was causing me to hesitate before.

Light upper body work. Alternate sets of:

Chins - BW x 6 x 3

Low Incline DB Press - 45s x 8, 50s x 8 x 2

1/2/2012

Warm Up

One Arm KB Swing (each side) 16 kg x 10, 24 kg x 10, 32 kg x 10

Snatch complex with bar

Snatch

40 kg x 3

50 x 2

55 x 1

60 x 1

65 x 1

70 x 1

75 x miss x 2 - dropped forward both times

75 x 1 - overcompensated and almost lost backwards, but managed to save

80 x miss - dropped forward

80 x 0.75 - caught, but was out of position and dropped as I tried to stand

60 x 2 x 3

65 x 2

I’m pretty happy with these. 75 kg was my previous best in competition a few years ago and 80 kg is my training PR for this century. I just need to get used to handling the heavier weights again and I should be good for more. I know why I’m missing lifts forward and how to fix it. Also, for me, when snatching feels good then the sheaf tends to go higher.

Remainder of the workout was done nice and easy.

Bear Hug Deadlift

101 lbs x 5

146 x 3

191 x 1 x 3

146 x 5

Press w/Thick Bar

50 lbs x 20

100 x 5

110 x 5 x 3

Squats w/Buffalo Bar

50 lbs x 20

150 x 5

200 x 3

230 x 2

260 x 2

280 x2

One Arm DB Row w/Thick Handle (each side)

80 lbs x 5 x 3

1/4/2012

Warm Up
One Arm KB Swing (each side) 16 kg x 10, 24 kg x 10, 32 kg x 10
Snatch complex with bar

Snatch
40 kg x 3
50 x 2
55 x1
60 x 1
65 x 1
70 x 1
76 x1 - this was a misload. I actually meant to go to 73kg, but absent mindedly added 3 kg to each side instead of 3 kg total
78 x miss
78 x 1
80 x miss x 2
80 x 1 – ties previous post Y2K training PR
82 x miss x 2 – I couldn’t resist trying for a new PR, but the technique wasn’t quite there yet with this weight. I’m rushing the second pull with the heavier weights. Need to let the bar get deeper in the pocket before I explode. When I do that I catch the weight effortlessly. When I don’t, I tend to lose it out front.
75 x 1 x 2

Clean & Jerk
70 kg x 1
75 x 1
80 x 1
85 x1
90 x 1
95 x 1
100 x1 – I was probably good for a little more, but decided not to push my luck.

Front Squat
45 lbs x 20
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 3
245 x3 – new rep PR for this century
185 x 5

Lifted at the 45th annual Southern Open. This was a very good meet. Good number and mix of lifters. Well run and ended at a decent time.

I placed 2nd out of 3 lifters in the Masters 94 kg weight class. Got beat by a 40 year old whippersnapper. My plan was to approach this as a heavy workout, post a total, and get used to being back on the platform. Best scenario, I wanted to get SN 80 kg and CJ 105 kg, for a 185 total. Ended up with SN 80, CJ 102, 182 total. The snatches were solid and all my cleans were perfect, but I just didn't get enough drive on the 105 jerk. Overall, a good day. The snatch and total were both competition PRs, and the jerk was only 2 kg less than my previous best in competition.

Assuming real life allows me to train adequately, I'll probably hit one or two more local meets that are happening in Feb and March, then lift at the National Masters in Savannah at the end of March. After that I'll switch my full attention to highland games and preparing for the MWC in Greenville in May.

Bill - It looks like Triad or Mint Hill will probably be my first games this year. I toyed with the idea of doing some of the earlier Florida games, especially Sarasota, but limited time and money got in the way of that fantasy.

Jeff - How's your foot? Are you ready to administer the 2012 round of whoopings?

We were having storms with a lot of thunder and lightning, so I thought holding metal weights overhead might not be wise. I decided to play with stones instead in hopes that Thor would not strike me dead.

Once I started working out I realized that due to the extremely high humidity everything was covered with a film of moisture, so the stones were a little heavier and a lot slicker than normal.

Warm Up
WFD & WOB swings with 60 lbs weight
Snatch complex with bar

Hang Snatch from hip + OH Squat
40 kg x 2 + 3
50 x 2+ 3
55 x 2 + 3
60 x 1 + 2

Snatch
65 kg x 1
70 x 1
75 x 1
80 x 1
84 x miss - caught, but dropped before I could stand
84 x miss x 2 - barely missed to front. At this point the close misses are starting to piss me off and I decide that I am either going to make the lift or someone can pry my cold dead hook grip from the bar when they find my body tomorrow morning.
84 x 1 - WIM for the win!! This equals my all time best snatch performed on 3/15/1987, just shy of 25 years ago. Of course, I also weighed about 35 lbs less back then (170 vs 205), but it still feels good to lift a weight at 50 that I lifted at 25. Power Levels are over 9000 and headed higher.
70 x 1 x 3

Push Press w/thick bar
50 lbs x 10
110 x 5
130 x 5
150 x 3
170 x 2

Bulgarian Split Squat
BW x 5 x 3

One Arm Standing Cable Fly
30 + tubing x 5 x 3

Rollouts from knees
5,5,5

Johnny, What is your first game this year? I want to see your distances. You are going to be tough with the lifting PR's you are doing. Keep up the good work.

Jeff,
Looks like Dunedin is going to be my first games this year. Then maybe B's at Triad, masters at Mint Hill, then MWC at Greenville. Hopefully all the lifting I'm doing will show up in my throwing. At the very least I think it should help the height events. We'll see.

Right now I'm trying to resist the urge to throw (I can hear the Siren call of the sheaf seductively whispering my name) so that I can concentrate on training for the National Masters OL meet in Savannah at the end of March. I've wanted to lift in this meet for several years, but something has always ended up preventing it. I may actually manage to get there this time, and might even post a decent total. Once that's over, my focus is going to be on getting ready for the MWC.

When are you throwing? I assume you'll do Loch Norman, and I believe I saw your name listed for Tartan Fest in Columbia.

Yea , The Tartan Fest will be my first Game. Lock Norman and Mint Hill. Maybe do a track meet in there. My lifting and throwing is going slow. Can't find the time. Let us know how the OL meet goes.

70 x 1
80 x 1
90 x 1

Clean
100 kg x 1
110 x miss x 2 - strong pull, but chickened out on dropping under the bar. That's the problem with growing up and getting old: you develop a self-preservation instinct that prevents you from doing the stupid things you want to do, such as diving into an ATG squat on 50 year old knees under a weight heavier than your body as it accelerates toward the earth. Instead of the reckless abandon of youth, you find yourself fighting to overcome your own good judgement. I have won this battle before and will again.

Warm Up
One Arm KB Swing (each side) 16 kg x 10, 24 kg x 10, 32 kg x 10
Snatch complex with bar

Hang Snatch from hip + Hang Snatch from knee + Snatch from floor
40 kg x 1
50 x 1
60 x 1

Snatch
60 kg x 1
70 x 1
75 x 1
80 x miss x 2
80 x 1
85 x miss x 3 - couldn't fix overhead. I'm still rushing the 2nd pull on the heavier weights and it's causing me to be just slightly forward at the catch. If I can get this fixed I think I'm strong enough to snatch 90 kg in the near future.

Clean & Jerk
80 kg x 1
90 kg x 1
100 x 1
105 x miss - good clean, but close miss on jerk. Drove it too far forward.

Front Squat
45 lbs x 10
145 x 5
195 x 3
235 x 3
255 x 3 x 2 - new 3 rep PR. Felt so good I did it twice.
275 x 1 - new PR. I was probably good for 10-20 lbs more.

National Masters Weightlifting Championships, Savannah, GA

Had a great time and lifted well. The meet was very well run and an enjoyable experience all around. My wife and I had a nice time in Savannah and at the meet. We got to talk with an old friend we'd only seen once in the last 26 years. I also ran into and talked with Doug Ballard. Plus it was a blast lifting with guys my own age and being around all the other old guys crazy enough to still be doing this.

I was in the 50-54 age group 94 kg weight class. The real competition in this class was between Michael Cohen and Michael Rutherford, with Michael Cohen winning. The rest of us were behind them and ended up only being separated from each other by 11 kg. I finished 6th, but with better attempt selection I could have been one or two spots higher.

I was hoping for a 190 kg total if everything went well. This is the qualifying total for the World Masters Championships for my age/weight. Opened with 76 kg in the Snatch. Pulled and caught it easily, but sat too far back as I started to recover and had to drop it. I took the conservative approach and repeated the weight, making it easily. In hindsight I should have just moved on up to my next weight. I took 81 kg for my last attempt and made it no problem. I could have easily done 85+ kg. In the Clean & Jerk I went 98, 103, 105. All three attempts were way too easy. I probably could have done at least 110 kg. I definitely underestimated how well I had peaked and my capabilities for the day. Of course this is better than the opposite problem. In any case, the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and 186 kg Total were all competition PRs and I am very pleased.

Now it's on to throwing and the MWC in Greenville.

Thanks, Craig. My wife took a couple of long distance cell phone videos of my clean & jerk. I'll check them out and post them if they look good enough to bother with.
