Hey, I feel the wfd is my worst event, and I have been watching videos to sort of see what I'm doing wrong. Now, I know I would do alot better if I could get two spins in before I release, but I also found something else I was curious about. I watched a video the other day, where all the competitors after swinging the impliment behind their backs, started to spin it above their heads 2 or 3 times  before going into the twirling spins. can anyone tell me if this really helps, or is it just a waste of energy?

Pretty much everyone who has ever done that returned to the traditional technique.  That should tell you all you need to know.

And also, can you please post that video?  I've never seen a video with more than one person throwing that way, and you found one where all the competitors throw that way?  I'd love to see it.

With a lot of your posts you seem to want to reinvent the wheel, but honestly the road is already laid out, it takes time and hard work.  There are a ton of posts on this board from over the last few years describing how to do these events.  You are doing the right thing by watching a lot of video, but a lot of reading will help as well.

Better yet, buy some of these:

I admit, I have probably been going about this all the hard way, but that's only because what I've been doing so far really hasn't been cutting it, so I'm trying whateve I can. all the advice you can give me would much be appreciated.

thanks, i had never seen that video.  ftr, I wouldn't try to emulate those guys.  Find videos of guys throwing 70-80-90 feet, and then do that.

You have to realize that this sport is difficult.  It takes time, sometimes years and sometimes never, to master some of the events.  And just when you think you've got it all figured, something goes wrong.  Be patient, get strong, do drills, work on technique, watch videos, work with other athletes, etc....  it will happen.

Check out the training logs, there is a lot of info in there.  Make a training log, people will gladly give you advice.

Notice that all the winders are just doing one spin. That's fine if you're starting out, but ultimately you want to get to two.

Alright I'll say it if no one else will.
When does a kilt become a dress??? Third guy in the video, thats when!
I have been at a few games where german men come out dressed in ankle length dresses and once a feather boa!!!
If you want to see a great example of throwing the LWFD
with winds and two rotations check out Harrison Bailey III.Unless you have his raw athletic ability and knowledge I'd stick to basics.

I would like to do everything Harrison does on every throw, including distance please.  You just don't hop over the rope in this sport and be good at it cause you decided to.  You have to really work for years and be pretty strong.  Everyone has put the time in in the gym and the field.  And we are talking a lot of years not a couple.  I would guess that anyone decent in this sport has over 10 years minimal of training someplace and most have been training twice that or more.

Again, let it be known that HB3 DOES NOT throw like that any more and hasn't for many years.

If I had to guess though, I would say the blonde kid one that event. It looked to me like he had the best realeases, looked like a cannonball firing out of a cannon. and it was about the right size for it too

Just so you know, I tried the wind around the head thing for a large part of one season.... only with the 28'er.  My stance was different from those guys, but still.  At first  it went OK, though 28 was just a little too heavy. I could whale away on 22 pretty good.

After my shoulder started getting a little bit sore, I started focusing more on the 2-spin. Honestly, I never really did a single spin!  My single spin was always prefaced by the overhead twirl you see in those videos.

Truth...

it was only a month, maybe before my double spin was a couple of feet better than my twirl-twice-to-single-spin throw.  This is back when I was throwing 33-36 feet my first season.

What Craig says is true. There IS room for innovation here, but when good throwers try something new and then let it go, there's a reason.  Don't re-learn the reason they already learned.  That's just a waste of time.  This stuff is hard enough without wasting a mess of time on stuff that other people have already proved doesn't work.

Now if you are a thoughtful guy and have some experience that shows you a different way to do things...if you've trained hard and are strong, then try your innovation. TRY it.  But be realistic, too.
