I am a lightweight and I am having a hard time with my form with wfd. With the light weight I am doing better at it but with heavy I find myself throwing myself around rather than the weight. I tend to get off balance when I do the two-spin and the weight pulls me. What are some things I can do to help fix my form and build my spins back up to throw bigger?
Also, with hammer, I'm having two corresponding problems. I'm pulling myself off balance trying to get good spins and right when I'm in the groove where I have a solid control and good rotation on the hammer I start golfing about every other throw. How can I get a better rotation that will meet the middle ground? |

I would have to see some video of your hammer to offer advice there. You might need to counter with your lower body more. With the HWFD, You have to be more patient and give it time to come around before making your turns. If you are too early, you try to muscle it more and that will pull you off balance. First turn slowish, get your footwork and set yourself up for a faster turn two.

Thanks for the tips! I'm competing on the 28th and hopefully I'll have some vid. to show for how I'm doing. I saw a bunch of pictures of Eric Frasure throughout his spins in WFD at each step and I've scraped together some ideas on how to try and use momentum to my advantage more. |

For hammer, I would focus on rotating your hips opposite of where the ball is. For instance (if you are a righty) when the hammer is over your head and the ball off to the left your hips should be to the right and vise versa on the other side always accelerating the hammer down the orbit, never up (until delivery). This always helps me find my rhythm and not fall off balance so much.
Hope that helps and doesn't confuse the heck outta ya! |

I've got a question about this.. I met with college throwing coach (mainly for shotput but he also gave his input on hammer as well) this weekend and he had me accellerate on the upside of the orbit rather than on the dowside of the orbit and I hit a 4' HH training PR of 91' without spikes. My previous training PR was 87' and my meet PR was 88'11.75".. his philosophy was that you want the speed increasing on the upside rather than the downside... I tried it with the light hammer as well and hit a 2' training PR.. anybody have any thoughts/comments to add to this?? I'm just curious as to what everone else out there is doing. I was previously throwing with all my on the downside of the orbit then adding power on the upside for my release.. but this seems to work just as well with less balance issues.. |
