I am a newbie, weigh 215, 5'10" -with shoes :)  = so I am not very big.

As I train and learn to throw weight for height should I go with the "spin?"  It seems like if I learn to do that properly, I will be able to ultimately throw higher.

here is an example of what I mean-

do you think I should learn to throw this way from the outset?

I'm not the right person to ask, cause I don't spin.

My personal opinion is that you should be throwing the 56 wfd at least 40' before attempting to spin with it for height.

The 42 can be spun anytime cause it's so much lighter.  Again, just my opinion on that one.

I stand and will probably only ever stand.  That 56 is NOT light!

damn that is so high!

I throw masters so I get to throw the 42.  But, this weekend it wasn't an option, we all thru the 56.  It's not so bad getting up to waiste high   BUT THEN.... the work begins.  I stand with you- IT's a heavy bastard.

You can choose either way. This is a controversial technique of the Highland Games.  I say if you can do it and it improves your score, more power to you.  Just make sure to practice both techniques, as some games do not allow the spin technique.

And dont worry about your height. Im only 5'8".  When I spin i get an extra foot or two. Im sure it doesnt hurt, in this case, that i weigh 260 lbs.

Hope i helped.

Drink to the fame of it, honor the name of it, The Tartan.

IMO,

Everyone should learn to stand first.  Once you are decent at that then play with the spin.  There are a number of games, esp. abroad, that don't allow it.  So, I say start there and get strong.

"Once you are decent at that then play with the spin."

HBIII - For my own edification, what would you consider "decent?"  Might help adjust expectations for some of us mortals...

I guess I mean decent in regard to technique and your class of throwing.  Personally, I was a 15.6 WOB thrower when I started spinning.  I would usually end up in the back half of the pack but I could do the movement and knew I could clear 14 at any games.  That may suck for Zolk or Betz but okay for me.  I also felt like I had worked hard at the event with little progress.  The moral to the story is:  you better be able to pull it out of your arse if you need to.
