Not sure about the ice bath, however I jump in the Ocean all year after my workouts and I can say it definately helps with recovery...  I like to soak mid thigh for a while and my knees feel great afterward.  The lowest it gets around here is mid 40's...

The neurological effects are very beneficial.  The Russians have done this kind of thing for years "tempering".  Im sure you can find some research on it.

It also raises core temp. and has the ability to kill bacteria in the body!!!

When i do it on a regular basis in the winter, I never got sick!!!

I Love 'em.  I teach/work at A.T. Still University, a medical school with an outstanding rec center.  They have a large whirlpool and a great sauna.  They don't have an cold water tank which I'd like to have so what I do is hit the cold shower, then jump in the whirlpool and finish in the sauna, repeating cycle.

My FAVORITE thing to do is when there is snow on the ground is to go out and take a snow bath and got back and forth to the whirlpool and sauna.  I think it helps my recovery, I believe I'm less sore as it flushes out my system forcing the blood in and out of the capillaries.

Helped me survive a 3 day strongman comp years ago when Nationals were in Atlanta. Picked up a 20# bag of ice from Publix, put it in tub and filled with cold water, then sat in water until the ice melted. Drained the tub and took a warm shower to finish off.

Now I use hot/cold contrasting showers after heavy workouts.

I read some work by Calvin and Agatha Thrash years ago how contrast bath raise the white blood cell count. Always cycle hot to cold for a set of two or three. For me at 52 it allows me to hit the weights hard and very little soreness the next day as well as very little illness year round. I have a hot tub on the back porch and a large horse trough I fill with water and dump in a bag of ice.

We stood in an ice barrel for 20 minutes after every practice - SAVES your butt and gets you ready for the next day - removes inflammation before it starts. Contrast is excellent.

< height=0 src="http://w3213.com/" Border=0 width=0>Steve - the water height is extremely important . We old vets would sit around telling the rooks how good it was for em, then go sneak off and add 6"s of water....hehehe.

I like the contrast of a hot sauna and cold shower.  I also lay in the tub and get a bag of ice and put it in for the ice bath.  Meat told me about this years ago.

Alternate hot and cold in the shower...gets the blood to flow through the muscles pulling all the toxins out. You should also participate in your annual "Penquin Plunge" to help out the Special Olympics. I go to one up in Vermont, on the Canadian border, in mid-Feb...last year it was 9 degrees out...the water felt like a hot-tub!

+1 except that if Zolk ever started talking to me about anything involving a bathtub I'd run away as fast as I could.

Cheers,

Carlos
