Open to other suggestions but looking to make a caber. Figuring on getting
3 20 foot 2 x 6's. I don't know the weight of these so what length am I looking to cut these? 18'? 16'? Thanks. |

If memory serves, 16' would be 75#. That's a good B-level caber (because of the lack of taper). I suspect 18' would weigh 84-85# and be pretty tough to turn.

I've got a 15 footer that I tapered a bit and rounded off pretty nice down at the bottom and it's a lot heavier than 75 pounds. I'm guessing pretty close to 90-95.

Hmm, I think there's an element of truth here. I now think my 16'er weighed 85 lbs (because it rated 750 on the Bradshaw scale).

you can buy a 4x6x16 ant most lowes and home dept. and it treated wood so it will last longer. I bet it weighs 90-110lbs

our group got some piece of pressure treated wood thats 12 ft. long and it initially weighed 90 lbs. great practice caber. 12 ft is a little short, but as i said, its great for practice. I think it was $30 or something close. oh, and it is a 4x6

My brother and I went to a home depot and for $50 got a 6x6 18' pre-treated timber. A little sanding and we have taking off about two feet between the taper and off the top. I have not clue how much it weighs but it is definitely a challenge to turn. Good practice I think though. If I could turn this I can turn most others.

Matt, If you're interested, I'll be bringing cabers to the Ren Fest in Holly, and maybe the Kzoo one as well. I could hook you up with a nice cedar for a reasonable amount, save you some $ and work. It won't be until the end of August, but let me know if you're interested. Dale |

Just a note for those of you using presure treated wood for you cabers, make sure you are wearing gloves when you are handling them. I am a carpenter and we are taught in school to always wear gloves when handling presure treated lumber because the chemicals they use to treat it can be toxic. I am told it is actually pretty nasty stuff with some bad side effects. Maybe also taping the bottom six feet might be a good idea, especially where it comes in contact with your neck and head.
