Personally, I like to have a wide variety of exercises, but if I had to narrow it
to 1, I would say Hang Clean. |

Ok DB...I agree with hang cleans too. I would even throw (no pun intended) in some overhead throws with balls and plates to even speed up things a little more.

If your a big meat head lifter then Gallagher is correct. but if you are a skiny little guy then deadlift. But then again Gallagher is always right.

I like the choice for snatch grip deadlift/shrug. Serge Redding, a former great weightlifter from Belgium, did another version where he also went up on his toes with the shrug. Do a search for Serge and that picture would be available on line to see his positions.

Ok then Mr. Stewart....you know you made me see the light on the deadlift and it from different starting spots....what I think is best is that yes...pulling strength is the most important thing in the highland games. How about cycling your heavy deadlifts or variants thereof for 3 weeks....take a light week or unload week...then cycle 3 weeks of your olympic lifts or variants thereof....another recovery light unload week and then 3 weeks of a very low percentage of your snatch max with overhead plate and shot put throws (Coach Mac is making me see the light on this)? Then possibly repeat the cycle if it is the offseason....hmmm....periodization of all the great lifts listed in this post is really the way to go....that way no one has to only do what they think is the single best lift...there is none! They all serve a purpose! The SAID Principle? Then again I will never forget the words I heard my good friend say (goes by RV).....Throwing is lifting. Tells me where the importance really is in this game... Just throwing thoughts out there... Gallagher |

I find it hard to balance my strongman training and my Highland training so I have been training a rotation of 3... 3 days a week Mon, Wed, Fri, 3 events each day so day one may be strongman highland strongman and day two would be highland strongman highland some days I may throw in an extra event if I feel good... I just started this and so far it's not to bad no signs of over training yet.. Does anyone else do any strongman training along with highland games.. any tips would be great...

One problem with asking this particular question is that different people are at different levels of training with each endeavor. You're way further along with your strongman training than with your throwing, while someone else might want to pick up strongman after a long background of throwing.
Anyway, I'd suggest you do a lot of sub-maximal throwing. This will take time, but put little wear-and-tear on your body, so you can do it a lot. One way to do this is to take a couple of throws for a given event to find your range, then put a target (say, a rag) at, say, 80% of that distance and throw at it over and over. The point is to throw easily, working on your form with each throw. This is more like playing the piano than lifting weights. That is, it's about neural pattern formation, not strengthening, so if this tires you out, you're working too hard. Like playing piano, it's also possible to practice too much and end up losing skill by reinforcing bad habits. To avoid this, with each throw work on a specific issue, and try to correct each flaw that you find. Don't just go take 100 throws. Take some number of throws, each time striving to do it better and easier. Ideally, you should stop one throw short of the point where it starts to fall apart. On a given day, that might be 100 throws or 1. |

Submaximal throws my a$$...Submaximal sounds like some kind of Autobot... Reverse curls...FOR THE WIN! Seriously, W. Hill's advice has added distance to my throws, at least in practice. His advice is very, very sound. |

Like Gallagher and RV says - we're tossers who lift weights to toss farther ....except for all you meatheads of course. I'm currently doing a squat day w. the goodmorning explosive squats 5x5 , a day of bounce incline or clap pushups w. rotational core( suspended plate twists) and hi pulls variations and a day of tossing or basketball - about 3 workouts in a week.. I usually warm up by throwing an old bowling ball or a rock around for 10 minutes . And walk 30 minutes almost everyday. Works for 48.

Ok, Here's one. Clean and Press on the Log. I did these one summer once a week while throwing the rest of the time. I would do a Romanian style deadlift with the log, then immediately do a clean (cleaning a log is different than a barbell, I'll explain if you need it), and then immediately press it and repeat. I did 5x5 and after each set of 5 I would be laying on the floor heaving between sets. That's it. This worked everything! I also did them explosively.

Well, I guess the real answer is make sure you put the bar on the floor. Why not start with power snatches, then up to a heavier with weight for power cleans, then load more weight for high pulls then finish with deadlifts, any variety? We don't only throw one event so why lift with one lift? Trust me, do the above workout once a week and you are covering all the bases.

Bill - what did you call that? Running the cycle or sumthin'? It's like Bert's tri-plex - overhead , nipple and belly pulls - vary based on grip width,weight , hvy to light or reverse, whatever. Might be the best way to spend 30 minutes and get better. Single best complex. |
