Not the ones that come in packs of 30... I have not been able to locate proper stones, Braemar or otherwise, for practice. There are no major sources of running water in my location, which means river stones are out; has anyone had any luck with landscape material suppliers, or am I hoping for too much? Hope everyone has a safe weekend; ya'll be good. Respectfully, Duncan McCallum |

Dunk - lf all else fails, check out those landscaping places. lf there's no rivers near you, they're bound to have all kinds of rocks for landscaping. l would expect the tab for 2 or 3 suitable stones to be minimal.

Thats what I did. Landscaping supply company and they thought I was out of my mind. I brought my electronic scale and when I went to pay for the stones the guy told me I could have them. He had never heard of the highland games. He looked at me like I was in some cult or something.

Worst case, I supposed you could always use a doublebagged sandbag and lots of duct tape to wrap it up tight.
Or,,,,, you could pay me lots of money and I will ship you a beautiful stone from the coast of Maine. Al |

Always keep your eyes open cause you never know when you might just find the "perfect" stone driving along the road. Wally will like this story. Many years ago, I remember driving back to the hotel sitting in the backseat to Mike Smith and Dave Brown. We were just leaving the Enumclaw Games location and driving along the small two lane road back into Enumclaw, Wa. Traffic was bad cause the games were over for the day. I was just nodding off in the backseat when Big Mike shouts: "John wake your a$$ up and look under that lone tree! Dave stop the car!" I woke up to see this beautiful, pure white, smooth, marble like stone. With over 30 cars behind us on this small road, I ran out still in my kilt to see this gem. Picked it up to see if it was at least close to the weight I wanted. It was. I stood there while every car was stuck waiting behind us, put it to my neck, too see if it felt good. What beauty! I sprinted back to the car with stone in hand. Being on the road and thinking about actually putting a stone in my suitcase and flying with it home, I needed to make sure this thing weighed in. Dave suggested we stop and weight it. I said it is Saturday evening, where are we going to weigh in a stone, all the post offices are closed? Well, we needed some dessert for later so we actually stopped in a grocery store, put this stone in a cart, shopped for dessert, still in our kilts, stood in line, and asked if we could weigh this stone on the checkout scale! It weighed in and I actually stuffed this 16 lb stone in my suitcase and flew it home. I still have it to this day. So....you never can tell when and where you find your gem! Of course, we had visited the beer gardens after the games before leaving the games site! Did I mention that somewhere in that story? Gallagher |

Folks, Thanks for the advice, especially the part about how stones are easier to find after drinking...absolutely how I am going to look for things from now on. Went to Carroll Rock and Stone, got them for free, though their scale was a bit off. Will keep practicing...looking forward to meeting some of the Texas boys in 08. Respectfully, Duncan McCallum |

I love explaining to people what it is I want to do what it is I am asking for. I went to a local coffee maker (they grind beans and sell to local business) and asked if I could have some of the burlap bags that the coffee beans come in. When I explained the sheaf toss to the guy, he said when ever I need more bags, just come on down no charge. The funny thing is I don't like coffee.
As for stones, I'm still looking for that perfect one, but I did find a nice 17+ used for landscaping by a local grocery store. I did get permission to retrieve it. He thought I was crazy as I explained the games. |

I'm thinking that tonight might be the perfect night to "liberate" a couple of open stones and a possible Husafell stone from a vacant house on the next street. I'm just imaging this phone conversation: Neighbor: Hello police, there is a man carrying rocks out of a nearby yard. Dispatcher: Sir/ma'am, just how much have you had to drink tonight? Just gotta find a black ninja suit.... |
