Thought it might be fun to compare some of the lifts we may do that specifically help, (hopefully), with the games. By that, a lift that mimics the throws. I have several I like, they seem to work, perhaps psychologically. Anyhow, here's one I like for the caber. Take the 45# Oly bar and stand it up vertically in front of you. Hold onto the bar as low down as possible. I am looking to explode up with the bar, then a slower return down to the start. My starting position is just above the knees, then explode upwards so that my hands are about top of head high. As I started this lift a few years ago I would never add weght to the top of the bar, however, over time, I have had fun adding weight to the top, (Hint -- Use a Collar), this keeps the implement top heavy and requires a fair amount of control -- especially as you continue to add weight. Caution: If you try it, don't lift with others around or if in a gym too close to mirrors. Kind of like the caber in that most of the length and weight is overhead. Any others??? I am sure I would be kicked out my gym for trying that. Or my house for trying it at home. It sounds really dangerous.
I would think a safer alternative would be to work on the "explosive strength" part by doing high pulls and cleans, etc. Another thing that helps with the caber (for me) is to do this drill. Take a moderately heavy med ball, a shotput, or stone and cradle it like you would if you had a caber in your hands. Trot foward, drop, and pull up like you are pulling on a caber...basically I try to throw the shot REALLY high, and have it land behind me about 10 feet or so. Hands finish high and behind your head. Just an opinion. Edited by KTDupuis |

Jeff - you talk to Dan John too much - good fella- I love goofy specific exercises. Try this for caber - grab up a big dbell and hold the top part in as close to a caber grip as possible - do front raises like a caber pull - arms/shoulders only. Move up to doing a "close grip dbell power clean"- pop hips - don't drop the damn thing - you'll hate it!................................"Dbell stone poppers" grab up a big dbell and put it right where the stone goes - do a quick hip drop and pop up it up with legs/arm - helps all body timing - go heavy- 2-3 reps..................................."Cable swivels"- drop a handle(from a crossover machine or a lolat pull) down to lowest setting -stand sideways to handle - ex: if working rt side - put rt foot close to handle - reach way back and down with both hands- and do straight arm core swivels from ground all the way around as far as you can go and all the way back - like a machine - 45% angle up like wt4distance or hammer - work both sides- get after it.

Kevin, It's not that bad with just the bar, it does get a wee bit hairy with weight added. I do like your medicine ball routine. Can see that working at the gym with a med. ball or in my field for warm ups.
Mike, Danny John is an institution! Great guy and very passionate about anything to do with lifting and or throwing. I have actually tried the stone poppers you describe and like them. Will try the caber dbells. I am always looking to "spice" up a workout. I can get bored with routines and love to change them up. |

Here are some things I did (do) for the sheaf "back in the day". I throw with my left hand on the tines. Using the lat machine, I would stand with my right side toward the machine, my left hand holding the handle at shoulder level (handle and hand are by the right shoulder) and pull with left arm straight, down to the left knee. I would also do it with the right to stay balanced. I would also do a more ballistic form of this with a heavy med ball. I put it in a laundry bag. Got into the throwing position, brought left arm up to parallel with the ground and throw it hard as I could into the ground with the left arm staying straight and the ball going to the ground.

I wouldn't get to carried away with specific
lifting...how about over weight throwing .... You
have got to stay FOCUSED on what you are trying to acomplish in the WEIGHT ROOM...INCREASED power to wt ratio's...stimulating the nevous system to maximun recruitement of the motor units ect. ect. I'm struggling with the avalanche of what I like to call "Circus " training...squats on balls...wobble boards... on the head of a pin ( ...y'all should be PROUD
of the fact that CIRCULAR Training is the latest revelation (I have pics from the 1840's from India- club training) and I don't have my calculator handy ..but I think the Scots have been tossing hammers since the 11-th Century...

Coach, you sound like Mel Siff (RIP) on the wobble board and balance
ball stuff (and I agree 100%). Here's one of Mel's joke pictures
from 2003 (I have others of Pilates, one-arm snatches, and strip sets):

I do agree with you, hell, sure you wrote the book on lifting and what works vs. what does not. Once my heavy lifting is done I do enjoy some lifts that mimic the throws. And about this time of year, chomping at the bit to get outside and throw I get a wee bit bored in the gym and do like to spice it up. I am sure many others are the same way. With limited daylight, leaving for work at can't see o'clock and returning home at can't see o'clock, frozen ground, ice, snow, etc., you gotta get your throwing fix in some how. I would so rather throw, but, patience, that's coming soon. I do remember you saying to lift to throw. But, all sunshine makes a desert |

Best throw specific lifting I've ever done, is clean, push presses and snatches. Seriously, I throw fairly well with pathetic upperbody strength. Over weight implements work really well, force you to focus more intensely on technique and work the moving muscles harder at the same time. |

cant beat power cleans, split jerks power snatches, one
arm presses seated in hammer strength incline, pec deck elbows locked , oly plate winds in front of a mirror check out legs hips. try throwing lighter implements in practice too more dynamic more quality rep s for form ex. 25#(28) indoor wt t and f also a 35# (42) 35# for wob tech too. plyos are great too can u jump? hurdle hops 2 legs triple hops 2 legs no run up standing long jumps box jumps gramma rosenthal also said "a volkswagen going 60mph causes more damage than a mac truck going 5mph" ( my old football coach also said that!) |

Coach Mac, I twanged my surgicaly repaired cuff in the shoulder this past week wobbling around. Not a heavy weight, in fact about 20% less than what I use. But it makes me think and rethink your thoughts about the circus and our goal in the gym, increased power to weight ratio. You might have something there, I wish I could learn another way.

Actually they did dumbass. Go back to accusing people of doing steroids, and leave telling people how to train to those who have actually WON something. |

Wow...testy, testy. It was a joke. You know, sarcasm. What ever happened to our truce Brian. It was working well for me. Why does it have to end. Let's play nice. As far as steroids...I have no idea what you are talking about. Honestly. |

Sports specific lifts are a bit misleading. Any program should be
periodized to achieve specific goals throughout the year -
recuperation, limit strength, speed strength, specific skills training,
etc. Weight lifting is better used to produce a general physical
response. Foundation - strength - speed - power. While
there are lifts that are seem specific to the throws - for instance
snatches for weight over the bar - that's not really the point.
Olympic lifts, or quick lifts are for developing a nervous system response, in this case, getting faster and being better able to develop power in an overall manner. These types of movements are applicable to many sports. That being said, there are a few everyone should consider. Squats, Cleans and Snatches are obvious. Basic bodybuilding movements to build a base of power. Forms of deadlifting during early periods prior to competition and speed development. Zig Zag Lunges or Twisting Squats which are great for shot and discus, Highland gamers and football players - See drsquat.com for a description of this movement. Keep it simple and do your research. |
