If it were easy, it wouldn't be worth doing. I'm dead serious: throwing in highland games is character building.

Been throught this and maybe your problem is the "ALL"
part of tips and suggestions.I have found that drills are useful to correct movements in throws but only one thing at a time.ie focus on identifying and then correcting one issue, practice till it is natural, then move on to the next. I almost feel like I have to forget how I was throwing before I can move on to how I should be throwing. This also happens when I gain/loose: weight, strength, mobility or knowledge of technique. |

Depending on which event ie hammers if you add upper body muscle mass it can shorten your throws.

What Prevail and Duncan said.
don't try to work on too many things at once. Analogy...my boss at a former job told me that yeah, it cost a couple thousand bucks to send me or a colleague to a conference, but if we came back with ONE really good idea, it was worth it. The same exact principle applies here. Go stare at YouTube, or go to a clinic. If you learn, really learn ONE thing from that clinic or from that 20 minutes of staring at YouTube, and then you incorporate that ONE thing, it was worth it. My own personal rule...NEVER try to do more than two things in one motion. This is from the guy who's buddies will tell you that I'm the guy on the field that overthinks EVERYTHING. Relax...get on your toes. That's what I'm telling myself in the discus these days. Ram that hip down the sector line... pull the top half around....that's what I'm trying to do in the shot/stones these days. NOT..NOT NOT NOT...Ram that hip down the sector line, AND pull the top half through the throw, AND get an active right foot, AND throw through my head. It'll never work. |

I am a wet behind the ears noob. But I do know for sports like HG, SM or PL you wont get rich and famous or popular with hot college chicks. So if your "head" is in the way; remember this is supposed to be fun. |

How heavy have you been throwing? That could be another factor. A good buddy of mine who is also on the forum, Scott Farr, walked his way up to about 32' in HWFD and then a couple weeks later he couldn't break 24' to save his life. All he needed was a few light weeks and to let his head clear up and he started walking his distance back up. If you push too hard you'll do yourself in. Don't forget to take a light phase here and there and to just relax and have fun. Another suggestion I remember reading on another forum was to try throwing without measuring for a while.

I highly reccomend reading the book Never Let Go by Dan John. He
emphasizes simplicity and reps. That way you don't have to use your head you're body just does it on its own an you consistantly get your best throw. |

Timothy, these guys are giving you great advice. Am praying you'll get that diabetes licked. I'm masters with health problems, but am still out practicing. My doctors are making me go vegaterian, with a little cold water fish and 3 Omega 3 eggs a week. I feel better, but miss my spagetti and lamb. Good luck. Beth

One day my older son was working on his baseball swing.
He kept missing my pitches when finally my youngest son said, "Hey, Dalton, maybe baseball just isn't your game"....Dalton turned around and told him to shut up in a very angry voice and turned back around with fire in his eyes and JACKED one. Some days we are more focused than others for lots of reasons. Sometimes, when we learn a new technique we get worse before we get better. I noticed when Sean Betz gave a clinic he would only teach ONE technique change at a time, when obviously there was lots of stuff going on. I asked him and he said, "If I show him everything he's doing wrong it will never work, you can only make one change at time, master it, then move to the next thing". |
