I'm putting together a collection of printoffs full of games results for women to help my wife have some goals to shoot for in the beginning of her training.  I don't know how much the Braemar Stone weight is though on the Women's Overall Rankings lists since it doesn't specify.  Is there a standard weight?

13-16.5lb is what I've seen... if you look at the individual games' results on the database, you'll see the weights of the braemar and open stones listed.

It's great to get new women in the field- rock on! Best of luck to her in reaching her goals!

According to the various rulebooks available online, here are the parameters for women's Braemar stone:

RMSA: 11-18 pounds

SAAA: (suggested) 13-18 pounds

NASGA: 13-18 pounds

I've thrown them from 13-17 myself.

Good luck!

Thanks ladies!  Appreciate the input.  I've been looking on the results quite a bit and was surprised that there isn't really a set standard weight for the Braemar stone.  I understand the range of weights though but it's a bit tricky when the overall Braemar Stone results don't list the specific weight of the Braemar Stone that the ladies used in whatever games they achieved their rating.

Hi Ben,

Again, the rulebooks are the key in that "There is no standard size or weight of the stone" given the nature of the implement, i.e. they are stones and not weights specifically created to use.  The shape, balance, and feel-in-the-hand of the stones can differ.  I understand your dilemma: sometimes the results list the stone's weight and sometimes not.

Don't forget about competitions, like at Portland, Oregon, where the women's Braemar stone was 48 lbs and the men's 96 lbs this year.  I like to warm up with a lighter Braemar stone and then work with a 16 pounder.  After my back and hip heal, I'll be working with heavier weights.  If a 63 year old can do it, your wife can too.

Best of luck, Beth Harper

You can overcome adversity!

Thanks Beth!  I'll remember those super heavy weights and maybe someday I'll get to compete there and see what that feels like.  Sounds terrible, but in a fun way.  My wife has been throwing my new 16lb shot a few times lately and I'll move her up to a slightly heavier stone soon to get the feel of that.

My wife Carrie threw my 22lb homemade Braemar Stone 13'6" today.  Told her that was pretty good for a novice but when she pressed me for comparisons I couldn't really produce any without doing a ton of research on the database.  But I told her that basically it means she won't embarrass herself at the games on the 9th if the ladies use the 22lb stone.
